Gender Fail

Married to Death Part 1: Electra by Yvonne LeBien is the first in a series of performance pieces based on women from Ancient Greek mythology. Forthcoming are a Medea and a Phaedra. This play examines what I think of as a kind of action via nonaction and/or nonaction via action. Electra is the prophetess of hesitance, fear, passion, regret, complaisance, complicity, the violence that arises out of silence and vice versa. As stated in the introduction, Electra is not a good person. In fact, none of the women I will be examining are. That is why I identify with them and chose to write about them. That is why they are the moment.

From the intro:

"Electra is not a good person. She is a princess. She own slaves. She is wild in her self-righteousness yet utterly ashamed of her self. She is stubborn yet indecisive, she is violently bored, she is a predator pacing back and forth in its cage and a heifer being led to slaughter. She is many of us. "
