DYPSO MAGAZINE
Dan Welch
This is a collection of 102 drawings I did at bars in 2023, collaged and then printed in spreads that were subsequently saddle-stitched to each other (i.e. each spread is interrupted halfway by half of another). The staples are in the center of the spine, so it's easy to bend the paper around to see everything. Or just rip everything out of the book.
No story here besides whatever I was drinking about at the time. No message either. I think that a love for alcohol can be a shameful and cowardly way to square up with one's life, but at the same time I think a lot about the scene from I'm Your Man where Cohen talks about feeling sometimes like we're betraying a mission we were mandated to fulfill, and coming to understand that the real mandate was not to fulfill it at all — “that the deeper courage was to stand guiltless in the predicament in which you found yourself.” He also says, “My reputation as a ladies man was a joke which caused me to laugh bitterly through the 10,000 nights I spent alone,” which is a pretty cool line, but probably not true.
