Having spent years with her practice firmly rooted in DIY zine and comics culture, Benjamin’s drawings of ultra femmes covered in blood, bugs, lipstick, and leg hair have typically been made with the intent of mass reproduction, through photocopying and screen printing. With her new work, Benjamin moves in an a more expansive direction, creating pieces whose primary motivations are not exclusively to be reproduced and reprinted as their final form, but are instead made to be viewed as singular and precious objects. For the artist, this new intention opens up infinite possibilities to experiment with scale, color, and medium, in ways she had not yet attempted.

Cavegirl Monologue is Benjamin’s most substantial collection to date and the works range from the most minuscule of talismans to larger than life representations of female creatures. It also contains paintings from her 2017 debut solo exhibition at Dress Shop in Brooklyn. Benjamin muses on intimacy, sexuality, self-perception, body dysmorphia, and trauma through her avatars. Her work is diaristic, approaching her subjects through the lens of her own personal experience; each piece can easily feel like a self-portrait. Her women are simultaneously self-assured and crumbled, standing defiantly on their own two hairy legs, yet seeking the shoulder of an empathetic viewer to cry on. Benjamin uses her art to sort through her own trauma and self-analysis, and seeks to give faces, bodies, and narratives to the different facets of her own womanhood. Through that excavation, she reaches for more universal ideas and truths about the relationships people have to each other and to themselves, hoping to guide herself through the abjections and frustrations of her womanhood toward a greater sense of self-acceptance and actualization.

The book contains a foreword by Reba Maybury of Wet Satin Press.

Anthology

2d Cloud, 108 pp, 6 × 8" , CMYK offset , smyth-sewn, printed by Regent in China

Mirror Mirror 3 is a vibrant maelstrom of mixed media, arriving at a stunning intersection of innocence, joy, and color.

The third volume of 2dcloud’s flagship anthology is created in partnership with Plum, a Brooklyn-based artist collective and publisher. Tiger Tateishi, well-known in the worlds of art and comics, takes us on a journey through a surreal land with Torakichi, a constantly-morphing green tiger. The artist saw this strange tiger as a combination of an animal and a plant. Inspired by science fiction, including Robert Sheckley’s early stories, his enigmatic works explored reality and its limitations. In 1966, his work was featured in the acclaimed 15th Yomiuri Independent Exhibition. In 1969, Tateishi relocated to the city of Futurism, Milan in Italy, and began working in the studio of Ettore Sottsass, bringing the ideas of the architect and designer to life. During this time, Tateishi’s personal artwork moved closer to visual narratives as he made several oil tableaux infused with science-fiction themes. Upon his return to Japan in 1982, he produced daily comics embracing the nonsense genre. Tiger Tateishi passed away at only 56 years of age, but is fondly remembered for the zest and energy of his mind-bending works, which invigorated the Japanese pop-art scene.

About the translator: Yosuke Kitazawa is a Los Angeles-based writer and producer, whose work includes writings on music, history, and the Japanese American experience. The association of these romantic representations with the mysterious and organic universe of the author of Toxic is striking. Here, the garish colors disappear to give way to square images in sharp black and white. The theatrical dimension of these graphic re-readings and the perfectly mastered play of chiaroscuro produce a feeling of anguish and strangeness, around which a dislocated narrative is gradually built. Born from off-cameras, ellipses and intertwined visual references, an inexpressible story unfolds page after page, offering the reader a unique journey to the land of intranquillity. Unpublished pages, fictitious comic book covers, photographs, imaginary manga pages, or even the invention of an unusual alphabet accentuate the relief of this story which does not leave its readers unscathed. Gathered in volume, these works are as many winks and cross references throughout the course of Doug (main character of the trilogy) and which are given here to see in their entirety. Vortex thus multiplies the round trips with Toxic, La Ruche and Calavera, intertwining the fine borders between the final work and its elaboration. Much more than a simple reference to the genesis of a story, Vortex is seen as a phantasmagorical extension that extends the cartography of the unreal world in which the characters of the trilogy evolve. A true graphic exploration, the illustrations presented mix English and invented language, reinforcing the feeling of an excursion to an unknown country. Children grow on trees where they will be hanged, or come out in smoke from chimneys. Decapitated bodies, severed heads, mutilated trunks, bear witness to some unheard-of catastrophe, as if erased from our memory. Wrapped in mute horror, we venture into the world of nightmares, encountering ambiguous ghosts. Cabbage-headed dog or snail-headed man, young girl on fire, these apparitions float on the border between dream and reality, conscious and unconscious, condemned to eternal wandering. Bal de têtes resembles the parade of fairground monsters and the cabinet of curiosities. The album is haunted by half-bestial, half-human creatures, resulting from improbable crossings and failed metamorphoses. Working from postcards, photos, printed images, Chloé Poizat recovers familiar icons, which she diverts, tinkers, mixes, and assembles, until the impression of déjà vu turns to doubt and to discomfort. The black and white of old engravings, subverted by splashes of harsh colors, further blurs the markers. They even chose to live together and share a workshop. This closeness at all times has not, however, resulted in merging their personalities, which remain very distinct, each of them producing an intimate and personal work whose result seems to owe nothing to the other. On the strength of this observation and driven by the curiosity to find a new form of alliance, they decide one fine day in the summer of 2011 to share a sheet of paper together. Not to cut it or separate it into two equal parts. But to really share it. To survey its limits and to plant an idea, a vision or a dream, each in turn, thus creating a common territory that no border can any longer dissociate. Pieces Montées is the inventory of these months of explorations and discoveries, the only rule of which will have been to begin each drawing in turn, Chloé armed with her ink pen and Gianpaolo with his stamps. Playing with the other, following his drawing, appropriating what exists to transform it, transforming each new start into a challenge, accepting to lose control of a drawing which will no longer belong to anyone but himself, such was the project of this rather rare graphic conversation, and such is the secret of its beauty.

Toshio Saeki

Éditions Cornélius

A cult artist, Toshio Saeki is the inventor of a unique style, in a field that he has totally transformed, the ero guro - which can be translated as "erotic-grotesque scenes" . This genre, whose authorship is attributed to the writer Edogawa Ranpo, finds its source in the origins of classical Japanese drawing, nourishing monsters and nightmarish scenes in many prints through time. Saeki, by declining traditional motifs and mixing them with his own obsessions, echoed the anxieties of his generation, the youth of the 1970s, who believed they could free themselves from the conventions of a paternalistic society before experiencing disillusion . Human society, its violence and its defects are the support of scenes whose cruelty provokes fear or laughter, pushing the mechanics of fantasy to its limits. Sadomasochism does not cover any reality here, drawing from dreamlike a form of macabre poetry. Stimulated by the censorship that is rampant in Japan - it is forbidden to show the sexes - Saeki makes the prohibition an artistic constraint and deports the oldest subject in the world to the absurd and dreamlike. His precise style, which reminds Europeans of the famous "clear line" of Hergé and Joost Swarte, remains strange for the Japanese reader as for the Western reader, each finding in this trait of perfect simplicity a form of unprecedented exoticism. This perception can only be explained by the absolute originality of an extravagant picture book, straight out of the pen of an artist who has devoted his life to tracing as closely as possible "what takes place in his head when he closes the eyes ". This second volume of the anthology follows the book Rêve écarlate and compiles illustrations published between 1972 and 1974 in the magazine SM Selecto. From Sergio Leone to Mœbius, the image of this region has gradually been built in popular culture to become a place of adventure and freedom. Bathed since childhood in this representation of a fantasized America, Hugues Micol delivers with Whiskey his own vision of the Wild West. Subtly mixing gouache and watercolor, from a stain on the sheet a mountain, a pebble or a silhouette is born little by little. This spontaneous method in the elaboration of the drawing echoes the allegory of the cowboy, a solitary man who roams a landscape, freeing himself from borders and laws. After Providence – where the action took place each time in a room – Hugues Micol here abandons the partitioned spaces to explore an exterior rich in rockeries and canyons. It is thus part of the tradition of western art, a sub-genre of pictorial art that was very popular in the middle of the 20th century. However, this classicism is diverted here in favor of a more instinctive approach, offering the drawing a rendering close to Cubist works. This gentle melancholy of an era is symbolized by the figure of the cowboy, icon of a world that no longer exists, a kind of ghost crossing the immensity of the desert freed from all constraints.

Singeon

Éditions Cornélius

It takes no more than 50 drawings of Singeon's talent and imagination to explore our most ancestral passions, fears and ideals. A small albino monkey who had gotten lost in a military port surrounded by boats of random size, sometimes very large, sometimes in a reduced model – giving him the appearance of a King Kong – found his way back into the meanders of Singeon's unconscious. . Through 50 rescues, the author stages a series of variations, constructions around a mischievous little monkey(on) delivering a princess from her dungeon or rather from her hold or her cabin. The bad roads, sorrows and rakes are not spared, no more than this ugly ignorance which is the worst of evils. These ghosts, benevolent or hostile, appear on rare occasions to stick to people's backs, bring good luck or even scare them by throwing red beans on the ground. Few are those who see them, even fewer are those who know them. Shigeru Mizuki is not only the one who saved the yokai from oblivion when Japan, eager to earn its place among the post-war nations, turned its back on its legends. No, Shigeru Mizuki is simply the greatest yokai fighter the world has ever known. He is the one who flushed them out even in the most remote countryside, listing them and drawing them with sometimes photographic precision. His work has sparked a new interest in these forgotten legends, which has evolved over time into a real popular craze. Without his drawings, Totoro and the Magical Creatures of Miyazaki would never have seen the light of day. Many studies have been based on Mizuki's work, and a chair in yokai studies has even been opened at the University of Tokyo. This book lists incredible drawings that Shigeru Mizuki has dedicated to yokai and presents, in black and white or in color, each of the monsters by name. A preface restores the historical and cultural dimension of the yokai, and details the major contribution of Shigeru Mizuki to the knowledge of these invisible beings.

Philipp Deines. Edie’s precise, intimately scaled, gouache-and-ink paintings on panel are structured around the physical aspects of transition and adaptation as well as mental and sexual health.

Since moving from first Chicago, then to Los Angeles while briefly attending grad school at USC, to now the high desert of Joshua Tree in California, Edie’s work has evolved from the acclaimed Memory Palaces series – reimagined facades of urban lesbian bars and gay nightclubs – to a new feeling of vulnerability due to shifts in the U.S. social and political climate. The work blurs lines between architecture and body with structures adorned by elements that seem to be both decorative and protective. Architectural components are used as visual metaphors for the ways in which definition and validation elude trans identities. It appears in a more visceral and chaotic manner, even to where there is no regard for the functionality of the vehicles.
